Still, I’m not sure how much of that applies to a typical apartment like mine.

Reflections from walls, floors, and ceilings all contribute to that effect. Instead of trying to block everything, it often makes more sense to adjust how sound behaves inside the space. That can involve working with surfaces and placement of elements rather than structural changes. Over time, even subtle adjustments can change how the space feels acoustically.
